1 QUESTION 2 BLOGGERS

1 QUESTION 2 BLOGGERS

The title is pretty self-explainitary, but we’ll explain it anyway. In this series we will pose one question to two Washington, DC area bloggers to get their opinion on a particular issue. For our first post in this series we posed one question to the Lacey Maffettone and Elizabeth Fassbender, the founders of Capital Area Fashion and Beauty Bloggers (CapFABB). CapFABB is an organization with over 190 members that brings together local businesses, designers and bloggers. Who better to get the ball rolling, right?

QUESTION:

Are bloggers journalists? If so, do they deserve press protection?

ANSWERS:

LACEY MAFFETTONE OF “A LACEY PERSPECTIVE”

When I first read this question I was actually in the middle of applying for press passes for several events here in DC. So, quite simply, are bloggers journalists? Yes. If I need to apply  for a press pass like my fellow journalists then I am in fact a journalist.

Do bloggers deserve press protection? I don’t know if I would say “deserve’, like it is a prize or something they need. I think bloggers are such a popular source for inspiration/news, and looked at as trendsetters because of their individuality. If they were restricted to having to fit certain criteria to receive press protection I think that would contradict the whole purpose of bloggers…an individual voice and opinion.

ELIZABETH FASSBENDER OF “SO MUCH TO SMILE ABOUT”

I think that depends on how you define a journalist. In my opinion, there are many different kinds of journalists, not just reporters of editors. there are photographers and photojournalists, columnists, and broadcast journalists. Bloggers collect and share information in their own way, and so I think some may be considered a kind of journalist. However, I’m happy describing myself as a blogger and believe if you’re finding joy in what you do, it doesn’t matter what title you give yourself! That said, being a blogger doesn’t decrease the seriousness I bring to my work- there is no reason to think we aren’t as passionate, hard-working, trained, or significant as any other writer! And, so I think there is case to be made that bloggers deserve the same “press protection” given to journalists! Of course, that is a widely debated issue right now!
