Fashiontonian of the Month: Marti Horwitz

Marti Horwitz

03 Jul Fashiontonian of the Month: Marti Horwitz

Each month we will showcase a Washingtonian who works in a fashion related industry. By doing this we hope to show off the great talent we have in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. We are excited to announce Martí Founder & Designer Marti Horwitz as our July 2012 “Fashiontonian of the Month.”

Did you grow up with an interest in fashion? If not, when would you say your interest for fashion developed?
I did grow up with it.  I was exposed to very high fashion by my mom at a young age.  My mom is a collector and I grew up playing in her closet that was packed full of Christian Lacroix, Alaia and Thierry Mugler.

What inspires your work?
Music, art and street style are all inspiration for my work.  Our Spring 2012 color palette was inspired by an Appel lithograph hanging in my living room, given to me by my grandmother.

Describe the person you have in mind when designing?
Our clothes are designed with a confidant woman in mind; she is unapologetic in her ways.

Which celebrity (dead or alive) would you love to dress?
I would love to dress style icon, Aureta Thomollari. She’s the personification of the Martí philosophy of dressing.

What are some misconceptions people have about the Washington, DC fashion industry?
People think that we don’t have a fashion industry, at all.  Of course, that isn’t true as we have some of the best boutiques that represent some of the best designers!

Where do you see your company in the next five years?
In five years, we will be in 2020…we’re always ahead of our time :)

What’s coming up for Martí this year?
Our must-have leather jackets and fringed furs will be hitting the stores for Fall 2012.   And we’re really excited about our cool and affordable jewelry line that will be available Spring 2013.

Where can people buy your designs?
In the Washington area, our latest collection can be found at Tabandeh, Lacy Couture, Style Etoile, The Velvet Lounge and Kiny Bis.  Or visit our website:
