What to Wear: DC Summer Internship
by ATFDC Contributor Kayla Phillips
DC is a city full of interns. I, myself am an intern at the Library of Congress. Today I’m going to give some advice on how to dress for your internship. First of all, I have noticed that DC is really hot during the summer, so you want to wear fabrics that breathe well like cotton, this means no wool. If you are like me and have to walk to work, and have to walk on marble floors it is probably a better idea to wear flats than to wear heels. Steve Madden is one of my favorites for flats. And don’t forget there is a Steve Madden store in Georgetown. However, if you are comfortable wearing heels make sure they are two inches or less, unless you work/intern in a fashion magazine, then you can take more risks.
Keep makeup casual and classy. Remember that you are representing your company, so you can’t show too much of your personal style, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have some fun. You can always add cute accessories like leopard print ballet flats, or colorful jewelry, or a belt. I suggest wearing neutral colors like navy, beige, white, or gray and adding color with accessories. You could also wear a printed skirt and a neutral top or vice versa. The goal is to look comfortable and polished.
