22 Aug Fashion Intelligence: Fall Wardrobe Transition
by ATFDC Contributor Susan Stipanovich
F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote in The Great Gatsby, “Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall.” Every year, there is a brilliant moment in the District when the humid, busy summer slips away. You step out your door after Labor Day and there has been a shift in the city’s rhythm overnight: the tourists have thankfully disappeared and left the monuments free of crowding and clutter, the weather is a pleasant balmy temperature, and the residents are easing themselves into another time-honored Congressional session. This time of year is one of the best for Fashiontonians, handbags heavy with September issues and ideas swirling for the upcoming season- an endless array of fabrics, textures, and colors. Amazing boots, luxurious coats, soft furs, and cozy scarves are to be found everywhere as the fashion industry reinvents itself for the new year.
This season hasn’t failed Fashiontonians craving new styles fall. One trend that appeared frequently on the runways was denim. Everything from shirts to jackets to dresses were seen in the collections of Just Cavalli, Dsquared2, and Agnès B. We saw the denim/chambray shirt style carry over from the spring and summer seasons, which makes a fantastic piece for fall layering. Great options can be found at Madewell and Net-A-Porter.
For the Fashiontonian on the run, the shoe options available are wonderful. Nothing says fall like a pair of loafers in a bright color or fun patent texture. No matter what your age, a few collegiate details are always a great idea. Sperry makes a very comfortable pair in a range of colors at budget-friendly price. The other great shoe for fall is the bootie, which thankfully hasn’t fallen out of favor with fashion editors and is a fun, playful option for almost any occasion. Pair with leggings or a fitted pair of jeans and a great top and you can swagger out the door knowing you look fantastic. No one does booties like Christian Louboutin or Giuseppe Zanotti, however Steve Madden and Cole Haan also make some lovely pairs.
Last but certainly not least, the handbags designers have offered up this season are amazing. Structured bags are back in vogue, with the satchel and cross-body bags appearing in Street Style columns and blogs the world over. J.Crew makes a lovely satchel that will easily fit all of your things, as well as a fun and functional cross-body bag that doubles as s clutch. Kate Spade has also released some wonderful bags for the fall season that are sure to add a pop of color and interest to any outfit. With so many options for fall, the chic Fashiontonian is sure to find great items to take her through this seasonal transition.
