Fashion Intelligence: Fall Accessories

28 Aug Fashion Intelligence: Fall Accessories

As any chic Fashiontonian knows, it’s all about the details.  The fashion message for fall 2012 is all about strength. This polished, commanding feeling carried over into accessories as well and is best exemplified by the above-the-knee boots, and rich jewel tones seen on the runways from New York to Paris. It was an opulent season to say the least, but one with looks simultaneously appropriate for today’s Fashiontonian. Attaché bags, animal prints, and rich embellishments pulled double-duty as they’re well suited for both work and leisure. Accessories made a power play for fall, standing on their own and owning it—and isn’t that what this season is all about anyway?

The first item needed is certainly a great pair of boots.  A pair of riding boots are suitable for almost any occasion, and a pair with a small heel will be both practical for walking and also will be appropriate for the office as well as cocktails in the evening.  Frye are an industry stand-by for boots, creating a product that is reasonably priced and also well-made in order to get you through the long fall/winter season.

Face framing, embellished accessories are also on trend this season, making jewelry options both fun and versatile.  J.Crew offers some lovely affordable options, taking this season to focus on a 1950’s costume jewelry theme.  Be sure to look in the District’s many vintage shops as well for some unique pieces to add to your wardrobe.  If you’re not keen for jewelry but like the idea of face-framing accessories, Michael Kors faux-fur neck warmer is absolutely fantastic, affordable, and a great way to add a bit of interest to any outfit.

Handbags are extremely important this season, and if you’re looking to invest in a bag that will never be out of style, look no further than the Mulberry Bayswater bag, which dutifully will take you from day to evening, hold all of your belongings, and with proper care will last years.   A lovely embellished clutch will also serve you well this season.  Several options are available, including a wonderful faux ostrich feather embellished clutch from Kate Spade which, although not very practical for carrying lots of items, certainly can be counted upon to add some whimsy to an evening outfit.   Coach has recently released their new Legacy Collection of handbags, which celebrates Coach’s history since its founding in 1941.

Another way to have a bit of fun with your fall wardrobe is to inject a bit of color with a great pair of gloves.  Ralph Lauren makes a wool and cashmere pair for Macy’s that are nicely priced and also will keep your hands toasty on those chilly evenings.  With so many great options, this season’s fall accessories offer a fun way to experiment with color and texture that will have jaws dropping all over the District.
