Fall Must-Haves for the Plus-Size Beauty

Fall Must-Haves for the Plus-Size Beauty

We’d like to welcome our newest contributor Dionna Humphrey of style consulting service Body Conscious Beauty. Dionna serves women of all shapes and sizes but specializes in plus size women. As such,  Dionna’s focus for All Things Fashion DC will be tips, trends, stores, brands etc for the plus-size community! This is her first post for ATFDC.

As a pint-size fashionista, I willingly embraced fall because I knew it meant getting some new threads for the new school year. I kept up that tradition even through college (don’t judge me). Which I think is why to this day I love shopping for fall. And frankly after battling insane heat and rain during the summer, I’m looking forward to a little normalcy!

The last few years has seen an upswing in ultra fabulous fashion for today’s curvy girl. Up until recently, we only had a few choices, almost exclusively online, and more often than not, it was something your grandma would wear (no offense to grandmas, I think you’re adorable!). But all that’s changed, and to get all my curvy Fashiontonian beauties ready for fall, I’ve outlined 5 trends you must try for fall!

Trend #1: Leather. I am uber excited about it. Not just because I think it’s ultra chic, but because it’s available in my size! From skirts to dresses, faux to the real deal, this trend can easily go from day to night, and doesn’t have to break the budget.  Take this faux leather skirt from European online retailer Simply Be.

My 5’3 frame usually requires me to wear my skirts high above the waist, which would look particularly amazing with this flared skirt. I recommend you pair this skirt with a pussybow shirt and booties. If you prefer a pencil skirt, this high waist skirt from Jibri is to die for.

And in this case I’d style this with a rounded platform heel, a mock neck mid-sleeve or long-sleeve fitted top & a statement necklace.

Trend #2: Peter Pan collar tops. Another fall favorite of mine. Pair this style top with a pair of your favorite skinny jeans, or for all those beauties who work in a more conservative office culture, a kick flare black pant or pencil skirt. One of the cutest Peter Pan collar blouses I’ve seen can be found at one of my favorite online retailers, ASOS.

You can always do a dark rinse jean with this top, but I highly recommend a color, like tomato red. Either way you can pair this with a pair pointy toe ankle strap heels, also another must-have for fall (see below).

Trend #3: Print pants. I love this trend for many reasons, but one of the main reasons is because it reminds me of summer. I’m a big fan of bright colors, and am a firm believer that just because we’ve got a bit more, um, junk in our trunk, doesn’t mean we have to stick to solids and basic black. Take this chevron print pant from Forever21 for example (available online and in stores!).

Try this with a bright color top that will stand out, something in fuchsia or sea green, and throw on a different color platform pump on the bottom to really stand out in a crowd (available in stores at Macys Metro Center). For a more casual look, pair the print pant of your choice with an oxford, also another must-have for fall.

Trend #4: Statement jackets. Ever notice how the majority of coats walking off the metro are all black? Boring! This season, warm up with a bit more color and flare. During September & October you don’t need to bundle up too much, try something with a bit of weight, like a cape. I love this Steve Madden Cape available from Nordstrom– online or in stores!

I also love this lightweight pea coat from Old Navy. You can often find cuts with a generous fit at ‘straight size’ stores like Old Navy, Forever21 and H&M. Don’t limit yourself to just the plus size section! Trenches are also good way to look stylish in the wet & chilly weather. I recently purchased this trench from Simply Be which is inspired by Burberry & looks just as amazing. Available in sizes 10-28!. Consider also this DKNY trench from Macys which looks stunning in the iron color.

Trend #5: Moccasins, Oxfords & Pointy Toe Shoes- oh my! I’m kind of cheating because that’s technically 3 trends in one. I can’t help myself; they’re all so fab! Adding a pair of each of these will go well with any of the trends outlined above, and probably with some stuff already in your closet. I’m really obsessed with oxfords. I have this pair from DV by Dolce Vita.

They are comfy & chic. And now, they’re available in color or print. Eek! These two-toned oxfords from Urban Outfitters (Gallery Place & Georgetown) are also a lot of fun. And at a great price! Available online and in stores. Moccasins are back again & are cuter than ever.  Minnetonka are the cutest & comfiest I’ve found, and you can find them online or in stores. This mustard bootie is a great fall color & goes well with another fall trend, denim & denim (for more on that trend visit my blog. Finally, there is nothing sexier than a pointy toed shoe. I love them in flats or pumps. This pump from Sam Edelman is EVERYTHING.

You can pair this pants or a pencil skirt. This flat from Steve Madden is ultra chic & a good price.

As much as I enjoy shopping I also believe that you only need a few key pieces to add to what you already have, and these pieces should also go well with each other. No need to break the bank each season. Happy shopping!
