What To Wear: Fashion’s Night Out

What To Wear: Fashion’s Night Out

by ATFDC Contributor Susan Stipanovich

Fashion’s Night Out has become an fashion industry institution since it’s inception in 2009 by Vogue Editor Anna Wintour and Council of Fashion Designers of America as a way to boost the economy and increase traffic in the local stores, with proceeds from the event going towards various charitable causes.  Originally only featured in New York City, Fashion’s Night Out has expanded to cities all over the world, from Moscow to San Francisco.  Our beloved District also participates in the event, with an entire evening of shopping and entertainment in on September 6th in Georgetown presented by the Georgetown Business Improvement District.  You can find the entire local schedule on the Georgetown FNO website.  Like past years, the 2012 Fashion’s Night Out will be replete with Fashiontonians in their most chic ensembles, and one must be dressed to impress (for entire FNO DC area listing see our Special FNO Go To List).

For this occasion, feel free to turn up the glam factor.  French-born designer Lilly Dache once said, “Glamour is what makes a man ask for your phone number and a woman for the address of your dressmaker.”  The night is about showing your style, and no better opportunity existed for a bit of adventure.  Summer dresses will do wonderfully for the occasion since the oppressive heat is still hovering over the District.  J.Crew, H&M, Marc Jacobs, and Rachel Zoe have some amazing options and many pieces are on sale as the summer season draws to a close.

Next, accessories are key.  Great jewelry is the perfect statement-making item that will be sure to earn compliments throughout the evening.  Nail-inspired jewelry has been on the pages of every September issue since Cartier released it’s Juste un Clou, designed by Aldo Cipullo. The designer has created magic for the house of Cartier since 1969; he turned a simple nail into a symbol of strength and beauty.  Jennifer Fisher makes a more affordable nail cuff that also makes a great conversation piece.  For unique pieces, be sure to look in the District’s vintage stores, such as Annie Creamcheese, which are sure to feature some eye-catching bits and baubles that will have you looking like the belle of the ball.

Since the night is all about retail-indulgence and party hopping, it may be wise to make your comfort a priority.  A chic way to solve this is to slip on a great pair of this season’s loafers.  These Madewell Library Loafers in Calf Hair are absolutely amazing and their neutral tones make them extremely versatile.  If parting with heels is too much to bear for a special occasion, a great pair of ankle booties will be perfect for Fashion’s Night Out, offering both style and stability.  These leopard print booties are chic and will be a great accent to a pair of skinny jeans or a dress.  Net-A-Porter also have some lovely options from Nicholas Kirkwood to Marc Jacobs.

Armed with a fantastic ensemble, every Fashiontonian is sure to have a wonderful evening as well in the name of celebrating fashion, restoring consumer confidence, boosting the industry’s economy, and putting the fun back in shopping.
