13 Sep Runway2DC: Jenny Packham SS13 – Perfect For Night Out in Washington
by ATFDC Contributor Susan Stipanovich
British fashion designer Jenny Packham is known primarily for her gorgeous bridal gowns and ready-to-wear collections. Packham used to show in London, however, from September 2010 she has shown at New York Fashion Week with celebrities like Mandy Moore, Emma Roberts and Dita Von Teese in attendance. Packham’s clients include Angelina Jolie, Dita Von Teese, Miley Cyrus, Kate Hudson, Florence Welch, Jennifer Anniston, Eva Longoria, Reese Witherspoon, Kate Winslet, Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Lopez and The Duchess of Cambridge. Packham has designed items for the James Bond movies Die Another Day and Casino Royale. Later in 2012 she will appear as a guest judge on the television program Project Runway: All Stars.
Packham’s show for Spring/Summer 2013 absolutely did not disappoint. Expectations were high as her show from last season was thought to be one of the best at New York Fashion Week and guests were eager to see what she had in store for them for the spring. Vintage 1960s silhouettes created the image of a polished, elegant woman. Ruched busts and fitted bodices were sent down the runway, pieces perfect for Washington’s endless cocktails parties and networking events. The Jenny Packham woman is intelligent, appreciates fine craftsmanship, and isn’t afraid to have a good time. Packham was inspired by Las Vegas in the 60’s “a hedonist paradise for the post-war generation, the entertainment capital of the world where the Rat Pack reigned.”
For the Fashiontonian seeking that moment when one slips into a gorgeous dress, confidence spikes, and all of a sudden anything can happen, Packham’s Spring/Summer 2013 collection is perfect. A night in one of these gorgeous frocks could start with drinks at P.O.V. on top of the W Hotel and end in Miami, and one would be perfectly dressed for everything in between.

There’s a certain electricity that these dresses carry with them, enabling the wearer to channel one of Packham’s muses: Lauren Bacall, Shirley MacLaine, and Angie Dickinson. Mascots of the Rat Pack, these movie darlings defied the stereotypes on screen and broke the mold for what was expected from women. Fashiontonians working hard in the city are the perfect women to bring these dresses to life.
