26 Sep Fashion Intelligence: What to Wear: Political Fundraiser
by ATFDC Contributor Susan Stipanovich
With the election just over a month away, the District has become electrified with political energy. Everyone from Anna Wintour to Beyoncé have been hosting and attending events in support of their candidate of choice. Mrs. Jay-Z sported a red 3/4-sleeve Oscar de la Renta frock that was strikingly similar to the ODLR dress Ann Romney wore for her speech at the Republican National Convention setting Fashionistas atwitter about just how conservative one should dress for a political soiree. Such events are normally quite formal, with dress codes of black tie or black tie optional. Long gowns, formal cocktail dresses, and conservative glamour are the keys to the political fundraiser wardrobe.
As any Fashiontonian knows, getting noticed is key in the District. While it may seem restricting to embrace the conservative wardrobe of the political elite, one can use details to grab attention for all the right reasons. Well-placed sequins, beading, and jewelry can be the perfect way to turn the dial up on your ensemble’s elegance and glamour while catching the eye of your fellow guests. A fantastic pair of statement earrings can be the perfect piece to compliment any outfit; particularly lovely are earrings from Charm Georgetown, an amazing independent boutique in our very own District.
If you’re looking to make a statement and get away from the expected gown or dress, try a classic tuxedo for a modern twist on menswear that is great for formal occasions. This sort of garment is certainly an investment and it goes without saying that properly tailoring is absolutely essential. Pair with an amazing pair of heels and watch jaws drop all evening. If a complete tuxedo seems too bold or masculine, try the more subtle combination of tuxedo trousers with a feminine silk blouse that is sure to also have a dramatic effect.
Often political fundraisers can be perceived as dry, boring, and overly conservative. Whilst it is necessary to show a heightened level of decorum, it may be a great opportunity to show a bit of irreverence. Unexpected details and accessories that are a bit rebellious can be the perfect way to have a bit of fun with your wardrobe for the evening. Fashionistas the world over swooned when Alexander McQueen released the skull-clasp clutch and with good reason- it has just the right amount of attitude for a formal event. The beloved clutches can be found at the District’s own Neiman Marcus in Friendship Heights.
It’s a very exciting time to be a Fashiontonian with no shortage of events to attend for the political cause. Armed with the perfect outfit showcasing one’s elegance, glamour, and individuality any Fashiontonian can glide through the election season with style and grace.
